PSG #020: Don't Be Your Own Worst Enemy: Overcoming the Trap of a Fixed Mindset as PhD candidates

mindset Sep 10, 2023

Are you your own worst enemy?

Do you find yourself stuck in the same old patterns, unable to break free?

It's time to ditch that fixed mindset and start embracing growth and change.

You've got this! Let's dive in and overcome the trap of a fixed mindset together!

1. Don't Let Your Thoughts Hold You Back

Have you ever found yourself feeling stuck or held back by your own thoughts?

We I was pursuing my PhD I constantly had thoughts like:

  • I’m not good enough
  • I’m too stupid
  • I don’t have time
  • I’m not strong enough
  • I’m not intelligent enough
  • I have not enough help
  • They don’t want me to succeed

It took a while until I realised: It's a common experience, but it doesn't have to be a permanent one. Many PhD candidates struggle with this. Most of my colleagues did.

Chances are, you may be falling into the trap of a fixed mindset.

This mindset is characterized by the belief that our abilities and intelligence are fixed traits.

That we cannot improve or change them.

It's easy to fall into this trap, especially when we encounter challenges or failures. As a PhD candidate, you face both on a regular phase.

This is most likely the only big difference between a successful person and an unsuccessful one. How many people have the same education and family environment but one thrives while the other is stuck?

So, let's dive in and discover how to embrace change, believe in ourselves, and unlock our full potential!

2. How to Recognize the Signs of a Fixed Mindset

Recognizing the signs is the first step toward breaking free.

One of the most telling signs is a fear of failure, which can lead to avoiding challenges and sticking to what's comfortable. Which is problematic when doing a PhD. You constantly have to face new challenges and experiments are failing all the time.

Another sign is a tendency to compare oneself to others and feel threatened by their successes. You are for example jealous of a colleague who won a poster prize and starts to talk bad about them behind their back.

If you find yourself making excuses or blaming others for your shortcomings, that's another red flag.

But don't worry, you're not alone. We all have moments of self-doubt and limiting beliefs.

The key is to catch yourself in those moments and consciously shift your thinking towards growth and possibility.

Next, we have a look at how to achieve this.

3. Overcoming the Trap: Developing an Open Mindset

Now that we understand what a fixed mindset is and how it can limit us, let's shift our attention to developing an open mindset.

  • Again, the first step is to recognize that we all have the ability to change and grow.
  • We need to embrace the idea that our abilities and intelligence are not fixed, but rather can be developed through hard work and dedication. This means:
    • Being open to feedback,
    • Learning from our mistakes,
    • Trying new things,
    • Forgiving yourself,
    • Being disciplined.
  • Another important aspect of developing an open mindset is to let go of our fear of failure. We need to understand that failure is not a reflection of our worth as a person, but rather an opportunity to learn and grow.
  • Another strategy is to reframe our negative self-talk into positive affirmations. Instead of saying "I can't do this," we can say "I may not know how to do this yet, but I am capable of learning." Or use the powerful word YET → “ I don’t know how to do this YET”
  • Finally, we need to surround ourselves with people who support our growth and development. This means:
    • seeking out mentors, coaches, and friends who encourage us to take risks and challenge ourselves.
    • By building a supportive network, we can stay motivated and accountable in our journey towards developing an open mindset.

With practice and persistence, you can develop an open mindset and achieve your full potential.

4. Conclusion: Embrace Change, Believe in Yourself - You are Capable of Great Things!

In conclusion, it's time to break free from the trap of a fixed mindset. Embrace change, believe in yourself, and know that you are capable of achieving great things.

It's easy to fall into the trap of negative self-talk and limiting beliefs, but it's important to recognize the signs and take action to overcome them.

Build self-confidence and achieve your goals by practicing growth-oriented thinking! Try to develop an open mindset and get right of your negative thoughts and fixed mindset.

Remember to stay on track by practicing positive habits and maintaining a can-do attitude.

Don't let your thoughts hold you back any longer. It's time to take control of your mindset and unleash your full potential. You got this!

This week’s action step: Awareness - how is your current mindset?

See you next week!
