Work-life balance is a term that gets thrown around a lot, but what does it really mean?

Simply put, work-life balance is the idea that you should have a healthy balance between your professional and personal life.

But why should you care? Well, for starters, burnout is a real thing.

As a PhD candidate, you're probably juggling:

  • coursework,
  • research,
  • teaching,
  • and maybe even a part-time job.

It can be overwhelming, and without proper balance, you risk exhaustion and decreased productivity.

Plus, let's not forget about your personal life. You want to sleep, eat chillax, go out…

We never know how much time we and our loved ones have here.

For example, I know when I work too long per day I get drained, lose focus, are much slower and make more mistakes. So finding a balance and finishing work a bit earlier to spend some time relaxing, walking, and meeting friends, is replenishing my resources and I am on full speed again the next day.

So, take a break, walk, and remember that your mental and physical health should always come first.

  • Fourth, learn to say no. It's okay to decline invitations or requests if you're feeling overwhelmed.
  • Finally, don't forget to celebrate your successes, no matter how small they may seem. Celebrating your achievements can help you stay motivated and positive.

By striving for a good work-life balance, you'll not only be happier and healthier, but you'll also be more productive and successful in your research. So, take care of yourself and find that balance!
