PSG #025: Create Your PhD Road Map: A Guide to Staying Successful, Focused and Motivated

Oct 15, 2023

Are you feeling lost on your PhD journey?

Don't worry, we've all been there.

With this guide, you'll learn how to stay focused and motivated on the road to achieving your goals.

Let's get this PhD roadmap started!

1. PhD Road Maps

Most graduate schools and universities provide some kind of PhD plan, structure or roadmap. Usually, it starts with :

  • a research proposal,
  • then yearly progress reports and thesis advisory meetings,
  • seminars, lectures, scientific workshops,
  • maybe some career workshops and then writing and defense lastest in the fourth year.

For me, it was more like:

  • The first year was complete confusion and overwhelm, despair, running around like a headless chicken, thinking about quitting,
  • In the second year, I was starting to have a little clue, feeling a bit smarter as new baby PhD candidates joined the lab,
  • In the third year, the big frustration hit hard, I’d been working for so long and still had no data to publish, experiments kept failing, and I wanted to quit and run away really bad.
  • Then in the fourth year, I started to see some light at the end of the tunnel, I knew how things go and finally produced data for my thesis.
  • Beginning of the fifth year, I started to beg my boss to finally let me finish, and worked for several months straight to finish.

Of course, that’s very generalised and not too helpful. You need to figure out your aim and your five big steps aka milestones towards that. Split into smaller actionable tasks and adjust with new results again and again. know what you are working towards. Guiding light, helps you focus, say no, set boundaries and stay on track.

Let’s dive in!

2. The importance of goal setting for PhD students

As a PhD student, it's easy to feel overwhelmed by the sheer amount of work that needs to be done. That's why goal setting is so important.

By breaking down larger goals into smaller, more manageable steps, you can stay focused and motivated throughout your PhD journey.

But how do you set realistic goals and stay on track?

  • Start by creating a road map that defines both short-term and long-term objectives.
  • What is your overall research question?
  • What do you need to do to address it? Meaning which big questions do you have to answer? These can be milestones/big steps
  • Now break these into smaller steps:
  • When you set big goals for yourself, it can be overwhelming to think about all the work that needs to be done to achieve them. That's why it's important to break them down into smaller, more manageable steps. This not only makes the goals seem less daunting, but it also helps you stay motivated by allowing you to see progress along the way. Remember, achieving your goals is a journey, not a destination, so enjoy the ride!
  • Talk to your boss!
  • Adjust your plan
  • Then start planning for the next weeks and month
  • Come back to your roadmap regularly and readjust it. (E.g. Set an alert or notification for a specific day!)
  • It’s totally normal to do so. Depending on what your research shows, depending on what is working or not… plans need to be adjusted accordingly.

This will help you stay organized and ensure that you're making progress towards your ultimate goal.

3. Staying Focused and Motivated

Let's face it, staying focused and motivated during your PhD journey can be a daunting task. With so many distractions and competing priorities, it's easy to lose sight of your goals. That's why developing a plan for success and accountability is crucial.

Focus:

  • Start by knowing your milestones aka your 5 biggest steps towards your goal
  • Then prioritize tasks and break down bigger steps into smaller, more manageable steps. This will help you stay on track and avoid feeling overwhelmed.
  • Having a clear plan with milestones and priorities makes it easier for you to say no to tasks that do not align with your goal. It’s essential to learn to say no to protect your time and focus.
  • Setting clear boundaries helps you to stay focused and healthy as well. Define for yourself what your boundaries ( e.g. how long you work, when you are reachable via email, how others are allowed to talk to you and treat you …).
  • Reevaluation of your plan incl. big and small steps along the way also helps you to refocus towards reaching your goal of finishing your PhD!

Motivation

As a PhD student, it's easy to get bogged down in the day-to-day grind of research and forget to celebrate the small victories along the way. That's why it's important to identify rewards for reaching milestones along your PhD roadmap.

  • Maybe it's treating yourself to a fancy coffee after completing a particularly challenging experiment or taking a weekend trip after submitting a major paper. Whatever it is, make sure it's something that motivates and excites you.
  • And don't forget to reflect on the journey to get to each milestone. Recognizing the progress you've made and the hard work you've put in will help keep you focused and motivated for the next leg of your journey.
  • Additionally, finding an accountability partner or group can provide the support and encouragement you need to stay motivated.
  • most important thing to do is to write it down, acknowledge it, and try to be or get aware

4. Reflection on the journey to get to the end result

As you reach the end of your PhD journey, it's important to take a moment to reflect on the path you've taken to get there.

It's easy to get caught up in the end result and forget about the hard work, dedication, and perseverance it took to achieve your goals. Looking back on the journey can provide a sense of accomplishment and motivation for future endeavors.

Remember the times when you felt like giving up, but pushed through anyway.

Recall the moments of triumph when you finally understood a difficult concept or completed a challenging task.

Celebrate the small victories along the way, like submitting a paper or presenting at a conference. Reflecting on the journey reminds us that success is not just about the end result, but also about the process and the person we become along the way.

So, take a moment to pat yourself on the back and celebrate your achievements. You deserve it!

5. Conclusion: Define your goal(s) and milestones to reach it to increase your focus, productivity and motivation

Let's be real, getting a PhD is no easy feat.

It takes a lot of hard work, dedication, and motivation to see it through to the end. You need a goal and a actionable plan to reach it.

To stay motivated and focused, you need small, daily steps you can take and larger weekly and monthly steps.

Regular reflection, evaluation and adjustment of your roadmap makes sure you stay on track and reach your goal of finishing your PhD successfully!

It’s of course a challenging journey! That's why it's important to take time to celebrate your successes, no matter how small they may seem.

Did you finally finish a chapter of your dissertation that you've been struggling with for weeks? Treat yourself to a nice dinner or a night out with friends.

Did you get a great review on a paper you submitted? Take a moment to pat yourself on the back and revel in your accomplishment.

Celebrating your successes, no matter how small, helps keep your motivation high throughout the PhD journey. It gives you something to look forward to and reminds you of why you're doing this in the first place. So go ahead, treat yourself and celebrate your successes along the way. You deserve it!

This week’s action step:

Block some time to work on your roadmap or to generate one if you don’t have any yet.

Get started!!

This is not an easy task and might take a while. But it’s really worth the effort as it increases your focus, your productivity and your motivation.

See you next week!
