The ABCs of Mental Health: Everything You Need to Know

Mental health is a topic that affects us all, yet it's often shrouded in mystery and stigma.

That's why we're breaking down the ABCs of mental health - everything you need to know to take care of your mind and well-being.

1. A is for Awareness – What is Mental Health?

Mental health is a term that is often thrown around, but what does it actually mean?

A is for Awareness, and it's important to understand that mental health refers to our emotional, psychological, and social well-being.

It affects how we think, feel, and behave, and can impact our daily lives in a variety of ways. Good mental health allows us to handle the ups and downs of life, form healthy relationships, and make positive decisions.

On the other hand, poor mental health can lead to a range of issues, from difficulty sleeping to more serious conditions like depression and anxiety. It's important to be aware of our own mental health, as well as that of those around us, in order to promote a healthy and supportive environment.

My Mental Health Story

When I was a fresh PhD candidate, I embarked on this exhilarating academic adventure, where the pursuit of knowledge was both thrilling and challenging. However, just as academic excellence demanded my attention, so too did my mental health. It was the beginning of a journey where these two aspects of my life would become intricately linked.

Now, let's switch gears and hear my PhD mental health story. It sheds light on the resilience and strategies required to navigate the ups and downs of academia, which significantly impacted my own journey.

I carried the weight of stress, pressure, and overworking with me for an extended period, which affected my ability to make friends, form relationships, and trust in my own potential. Imposter syndrome became an unwelcome guest in my life.

When did things start to change? Well, it was during a critical moment in my academic pursuit, a moment I'll never forget. I woke up and was not able to hear in my left ear. As it turned out I suffered an acute hearing loss because I neglected my mental health for too long. It was a turning point that altered my perspective and fueled my growth.

The transformation was complete when I realized that my mental well-being was as vital as my academic success. It was a profound shift that redefined my life.

My life before was marked by anxiety, stress and self-doubt, but after this transformation, I felt a renewed sense of confidence and the ability to navigate my academic journey with resilience.

Finally, let me explain why this story matters. The importance of sharing this journey is to highlight the significance of mental health in the life of a PhD candidate. I want you to walk away with a new perspective on the value of mental well-being and how it impacts academic success.

If I could summarize this story in one sentence for you to carry with you, it would be this: Prioritizing your mental health is the key to unlocking your full academic potential.

There are 8 areas belonging to mental health and well-being:

Mental health isn't just a buzzword; it's a vital aspect of our lives that influences how we think, feel, and act.

As PhD candidates, it's crucial to be aware of the emotional, psychological, and social dimensions of mental health. These dimensions encompass everything:

  1. Emotional: learning how to cope with life’s challenges and having deep relationships
  2. Social: need to feel connected and belong to a group, having a support system
  3. Spiritual: have a purpose and sense of meaning in life
  4. Physical: take good care of your body. Eat well, sleep enough and move
  5. Intellectual: expand knowledge and skills, be creative
  6. Occupational: have a job that is at least somewhat satisfying and enriching
  7. Environmental: stimulant, pleasant and safe environment

4. D is for Diagnosis & Treatment Options– When Should I Seek Professional Help?

Now, let's talk about the big D: Diagnosis and Treatment Options.

When should you seek professional help?

Well, if you're feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or depressed for an extended period of time, it might be time to seek help.

Don't wait until things get worse – it's okay to ask for help when you need it. There are plenty of treatment options available, from therapy to medication, and finding the right one for you might take some time.

Nowadays many universities offer counselling. You can contact them, they will give you an appointment and talk to you to figure out if you need professional help and what could help you. Don’t hesitate to use these offers!

And remember, seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness. So, don't be afraid to take that first step towards better mental health.

5. Conclusion

In the world of academia, especially for PhD candidates like yourself, the ABCs of mental health are not just a side note; they are fundamental to your success.

Understanding and nurturing your mental well-being will not only benefit your academic journey but also lead to greater happiness and fulfillment.

Remember, you possess the strength to overcome the challenges that come your way. Take care of yourself, take care of each other, and embrace your journey with resilience and kindness.

So, let's all make a commitment to take care of ourselves and each other, one day at a time. And always remember, it's okay to not be okay. Seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

Stay strong and keep on shining!

See you next week!
